Visit to Assisi

Basilica of St FrancisPiazza del Comune, once the Roman ForumLast Sunday, 27th September, thirty Chapter Capitulants travelled by bus to Assisi in the Region of Umbria, north of Rome. Assisi is the birthplace of St Francis and St Clare, who each founded Religious Orders. The building of the Franciscan Monastery and Basilica of St Francis was commenced in 1228, the year Francis was canonised. These buildings were completed in 1253. We were lucky enough to see where St Francis is buried in the Basilica named after him, and where St Clare is buried in the Basilica of St Clare. A truly medieval city, Assisi stands majestically, as a world heritage site, above the beautiful Umbrian countryside.
